Waste case study

What we recycle in our offices – and how

We have currently have contracts in place to recycle: Waste recycling facilities in our offices

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastics
  • Aluminium cans
  • Batteries
  • CDs
  • Cooking oil
  • Glass

We also have separate food waste collections, where the food scraps we throw away are sent to a company that produces energy through burning food waste. All remaining non-recyclable waste that's collected on site, such as food packaging and sweet wrappers, is also incinerated with energy recovery.

Each office has visible and well marked recycling facilities

Each office uses consistent colours and we use the WRAP logos.

Importantly none of our offices have desk-side bins, which means you need to recycle if you’re throwing something away!

Keeping an eye on how we’re doing

At each office we measure how much waste we produce for a week, every month. Our cleaners wheel each of our bins onto scales and record the weight of each type of waste. These figures all feed into a key performance measure for our whole organisation. We let our staff know how we’re doing, and, in particular, which offices are doing better than others.

Making recycling the norm

We used to have a range of bins in our offices marked with stickers we made ourselves.  We found recycling improved with the installation of large well branded bins.

Our staff were initially worried about not having desk bins, but with good communications and leadership from senior staff, this turned out not to be a problem.
