Waste produced and recovered 2010

The amount of waste produced by the sites we regulate has been reduced by 18 per cent since 2005.

Reducing waste can save businesses significant amounts of money and reduce environmental impacts. We will continue to work with businesses to help them use resources more efficiently.

The amount of waste recovered and reused has increased from 37 per cent in 2000 to 66 per cent in 2010.

The total amount of hazardous waste produced in England and Wales reduced by 1.4 million tonnes (26 per cent) between 2000 and 2010. The amount going to landfill reduced by 1.5 million tonnes (75 per cent) over this time.

Waste produced by the industry we regulate

The graph shows the amount of waste produced and recovered by industry the Environment Agency regulates. The amount of waste produced increased from 12.5 million tonnes in 2000 to just under 20 million tonnes in 2007, before dropping to 15 million tonnes in 2010. The percentage of waste recovered increased from 37% in 2000 to 66% in 2010.The increase in waste produced from 2000 to 2007 reflects the fact that more sites fell within the scope of regulation in this period.
