You are a small producer of portable batteries if you place one tonne or less of portable batteries on the market.
You must register on the National Packaging Waste Database within four weeks of the first date you place portable batteries on the UK market.
How to register
You will need to complete an on-line registration through the National Packaging (Producer Responsibility) Waste Database (NPWD).
What information do I need to give?
You need to provide information on the total amount in tonnes of portable batteries you have placed on the market in the year (also called the compliance period).
You need to record data on the weight of portable batteries, recording the weight of nickel-cadmium, lead-acid and other batteries as three separate groups. If you place batteries inside products, you only need to record the weight of the batteries.
Reporting deadlines
For the first reporting period, you must report the batteries you placed on the market between 5 May 2009 and 31 December 2009. You should have submitted this information through the National Packaging Waste Database by 31 January 2010.
If you have not registered yet, or you have not yet submitted this information, you must do so immediately.
Subsequent compliance periods cover a complete calendar year (1 January to 31 December). You must report the data from the previous calendar year on or before 31 January of the following year. For example, on or before 31 January 2011 you must report the amount of portable batteries you placed on the UK market for the first time from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2010. Where you only became a producer mid-way through a year or if you stopped being a producer mid-way through a year, you only need to report for the period when you were a producer.
How much will it cost?
There is an annual charge of £30. You must pay this to complete your registration and comply with the Regulations.
I also put other batteries on the market
If you are a small producer of portable batteries, but also a producer of industrial and/or automotive batteries, you must report your
industrial/automotive activity.
