The National Packaging Waste Database (NPWD) is a website with several functions for the Batteries Regulations.
NPWD is where producers can register and report their data easily and quickly. Only small producers of portable batteries and producers of industrial and/or automotive batteries need to use NPWD to register.
It is also where waste battery treatment operators, exporters and battery compliance schemes apply for approval and also manage their approval throughout the year.
Frequently asked questions
How do I register as a producer using the National Packaging Waste Database?
1. Tell us which types of batteries you produce (portable or industrial and automotive)
If you produce portable batteries, we will ask you to confirm that you place one tonne or less onto the UK market. If you place more than one tonne of portable batteries on the UK market you must join a battery compliance scheme and you cannot register directly on NPWD.
2. Give us basic information about your organisation. This includes the name of your organisation and contact details. We will then set up your account and email you a login user name, password and PIN number.
The NPWD is a very secure site. Users have to enter a password and 6 digit PIN number to login and carry out transactions. You must keep your login details secure at all times as this is the only way to access the Batteries pages.
How do I apply to register as a battery producer using NPWD?
Once you have received your login details, you will be able to apply to register as a producer. You will be given detailed step by step guidance to help you complete the form online. You can then submit your application for registration.
What happens to my application once I have submitted it?
We check your application to make sure you have completed it correctly. If your application is successful, you will receive an email confirming your registration, together with your battery producer registration number. If you have been registered as a battery producer within the past five years, you will be issued with your former registration number.
What happens if my registration details change?
If any of the information you gave us when you registered changes, you must tell us within one month of the changes. You have to log in to NWPD to do this. Important changes you must tell us about include:
- New organisation details, such as a change of address or name;
- If you are no longer a battery producer;
- If you become a producer of other types of batteries as well as those you listed when you registered;
- If, as a small producer of portable batteries, you produce more than the annual one tonne limit.
