Otters

Find out about otters in the UK: their recovery, where they live, what they eat, and their impact on fish stocks.

Otters: what we know

Otters are protected under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations (2010), with additional protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981). With Wildlife Trusts, we are the lead partner for otters under the UK Biodiversity action plan.

We are working with The Angling Trust and Natural England to improve understanding about otters. The document below summarises our current knowledge, including how otter populations have recovered, what they eat, where they live, and their impacts on fish stocks. It does not present solutions; these can only be found by working together and will be explored in further publications.
