Foot and mouth disease is an infectious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, in particular cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, camelids and deer.
Latest outbreak
There were eight confirmed cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in a very localised area in south-east of England in August and September 2007.
From 31 December 2007, the FMD Export Areas were lifted together with the remaining restrictions on the movement of FMD-susceptible animals and their export to other EU countries.
How to report notifiable diseases
If you suspect signs of any notifiable disease, you must immediately notify your local Divisional Veterinary Manager. If you need further information or advice please contact the Defra Helpline on 08459 33 55 77 which is currently operating between 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
