About the Pollution Inventory

Pollution Inventory background information and who to contact for pollution inventory enquiries

What is the Pollution Inventory?

The Pollution Inventory (PI) is an annual record of pollution in England and Wales from selected activities we regulate.

The PI now includes seven years of data from major industrial sites.

The main objectives of the pollution inventory are to:

  • tell the public about pollution from industrial and other sources in their local area and nationally
  • help environmental regulators to protect the environment
  • help the Government to meet national and international commitments and reporting obligations

How can I see the Pollution Inventory data?

You can search the Pollution Inventory using our 'What's in your backyard?' service. We have also provided some graphs, maps and analysis of the data in the pollution inventory data section.

Pollution Inventory protecting the environment

Pollution Inventory data has been central to the Environment Agency's spotlight on business environmental performance report.

The spotlight report highlights areas of success (and failure) in achieving pollution reductions.

In future, emission figures will be combined with other statistics such as production rates or energy consumption to provide better methods for showing relative environmental performance within industrial sectors.

Our 'environmental burdens' project is investigating ways of providing an indication of the environmental impact of emissions.
