This slag material can be used as an aggregate. We introduced it into the Waste Protocols Project shortly before Europe issued guidance on how to determine whether materials were by-products, rather than wastes. We used the work we had completed to help the industry successfully demonstrate that blast furnace slag should be classed as a by-product.
What are the benefits?
Blast furnace slag can now be used as an aggregate without any waste management control. We stopped investigations into this waste stream before completing a financial impact assessment but we know that this gives the construction industry easier access to more than three million tonnes of the material produced annually.
The current status
