The ash residue from the incineration of poultry litter, feathers and straw can be processed into a quality agricultural fertiliser. The Waste Protocols Project aims to establish whether PLA can be considered to be fully recovered and used as a quality fertiliser.
What are the benefits of the PLA quality protocol?
We anticipate a PLA quality protocol could help over 58,000 tonnes of ash avoid being sent to landfill each year. In addition to ensuring ash is diverted from landfill, using the PLA quality protocol could save around 415,000 tonnes of virgin raw material and avoid significant CO2(e) emissions.
It could create substantial financial savings for businesses by avoiding the need to comply with waste management and disposal regulations, and help stimulate new markets for this sustainable source of fertiliser.
