Wood: non-virgin, from post-industrial and post-consumer sources

Previously-used woods can be reprocessed to make valuable products including panelboard, chipboard, animal bedding, horticultural mulch and biomass fuel.

The Waste Protocols Project has been considering whether it is possible to establish the point at which processed waste wood can be considered to be fully recovered.

What are the benefits?

Through the development of a Quality Protocol, we would be able to divert substantial quantities of waste wood away from landfill. We could simultaneously reduce the need for virgin wood and decrease the regulatory burden on industry.

The current status

We held a public consultation on a draft  Quality Protocol between March and April 2011. The draft Quality Protocol, supporting Technical Report and our response to the consultation can be downloaded from the links below:

Since the consultation we have been considering the case for including animal bedding in the Quality Protocol. We are also developing test methods that companies processing wood for landscape use can use to identify the contaminants listed in appendix C of the draft Quality Protocol.

Until the findings of our work are concluded, we will continue to regulate in accordance with our current position statement which can be downloaded from the link below:
