The 2009 Water Efficiency Awards recognised companies for their efforts to reduce water. There was a high calibre of entries with many organisations demonstrating commitment to improving water efficiency. This both saved money and reduced their carbon footprint.
The Awards were supported by Defra, Ofwat, Food and Drink Federation, Envirowise, Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), Business Link and Utility Week.
There were three main categories for businesses to enter:
- Water Shout Award - celebrates great campaigns that change the way people use water;
- Water Save Award - recognises practical measures that save water and money; and
- Water Solve Award - acknowledges smart solutions for sustainable water use.
In addition a Chief Executive Award was presented to reward a business for its outstanding overall efforts to deliver water efficiency, including water and energy savings, communications and innovation.
Lafarge Cement UK was a clear winner, succeeding in the Gold award in the Shout category and receiving the Chief Executive Award. This was for their commendable water conscious project at its Cauldon Cement Works in Staffordshire. Measurable environmental and financial savings combined with a successful communications campaign resulted in reducing the amount of water it abstracted from the River Hamps from 290,000 to only 15,000 cubic metres per year.
