Why should you switch to a water meter
You may be able to save money on your water bill by having a meter installed. Most people also find they use less water after having a meter installed, and this helps protect the environment.
You'll only pay for the water you use
Switching to a water meter means you will only be charged for the water you use - in the same way that you only pay for the gas and electricity you use.
Water meters work like gas and electric meters. They measure the amount of water you use in litres.
All water companies install household water meters free of charge, and you have the option to go back to an unmetered charge during the first year after it is fitted. So there are no hidden costs, nor penalty for testing how a metered supply would alter the amount you pay.
You may find you start saving money right away but even if this is not the case, you can reduce your bill by changing how you use water.

Help protect the environment
The water that comes out of your tap is taken from natural stores of water underground (known as groundwater) or from rivers (often via reservoirs). There is enough water available for people and the environment under normal circumstances, but we must all be responsible in the way we use water. Taking too much from groundwater and rivers will harm the environment. Therefore we should only use the water we need, and not waste it.
