Using a gaff or tailer in England and Wales is prohibited.

The national byelaw for England and Wales

Using a gaff or tailer is prohibited at all times when fishing for salmon, trout, fresh water fish or fresh water eels in England and Wales.

You may use a landing net to help you, as long as it is not made with knotted or metallic mesh.
