Managing water abstraction: interim update
In March 1999 the Government published 'Taking Water Responsibly', which:
- Outlined its decisions on changes to abstraction licensing: including Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies (CAMS) - founded on local consultation; to make water resources allocation public and to help to balance the needs of abstractors and the aquatic environment.
- Led to licences being time-limited: CAMS is the vehicle for reviewing time-limited licences, determining whether they should be renewed and on what terms.
In March 2008 we completed the first cycle of CAMS.
In June 2008, to explain the future CAMS process we published:
The document:
- sets the national policy for local CAMS
- sets the regulatory framework
- describes the process of developing a CAMS
