2011 reports

  • December 2011 (PDF, 3MB) - Rainfall was highest in our North West Region at 169% of the LTA and ranged from approximately 100% to 135% in our other regions. December was the first month with average or above average rainfall in all our regions since November 2009. However, the ten month period ending December 2011 was the driest since records began in 1910 in our Midlands Region and the second driest in our Anglian Region (only 1921 was drier).

  • November 2011 (PDF, 4MB) - Rainfall was lowest in our Anglian Region at 46% of the LTA and ranged from approximately 60% to 70% in our other regions. In both our Midlands and Anglian Regions it was the driest autumn (September to November ) period since 1978. November was the ninth consecutive month with below average rainfall in our Midlands Region and the 14 month period ending November 2011 was provisionally the driest on record. Over the same period, rainfall in our Anglian Region was provisionally the lowest since 1921 and the second lowest since records began.
  • October 2011 (PDF, 3MB) - Rainfall was highest in our North East and North West Regions at 114% and 107% of the long-term average (LTA) respectively.  Elsewhere, rainfall ranged from 49% of the LTA in our South East region to 92% in our South West Region. Provisionally, cumulative rainfall in our Midlands Region for the thirteen months ending in October was the lowest since records began in 1910.  Rainfall totals across England and Wales over the same period were the lowest since 1996.
  • September 2011 (PDF, 4MB) - Rainfall was lowest in our Midlands Region at 50% of the long-term average (LTA) and September was the seventh consecutive month with below average rainfall in this region. Elsewhere, rainfall ranged from 52% of the LTA in our Anglian Region to 120% in our North West Region. Provisionally, cumulative rainfall in our Midlands Region for the twelve months ending September 1 was the lowest since records began in 1910. Rainfall totals across England and Wales over the same period were the lowest since 1996 and the 10th driest since records began.

  • August 2011 (PDF, 4MB) - Rainfall was lowest in our Midlands Region at 67% of the LTA and August was the sixth consecutive month with below average rainfall in this region. Elsewhere, rainfall ranged from 77% of the LTA in EA Wales to 148% in our North East Region. Provisionally, cumulative rainfall in our Midlands Region for the eleven months ending August* was the second lowest since records began in 1910: only 1976 had less rainfall. Rainfall totals across England and Wales over the same period were the lowest since 1996 and the tenth driest since records began.

  • July 2011 (PDF, 4MB) - England and Wales received 106% of the LTA rainfall in July. Rainfall was below average in our Midlands Region at 75% of the LTA but was above average in all our other regions, being highest in our North East Region at 122%. Provisionally, cumulative rainfall in our Midlands Region for March to July was the lowest since 1990 and the fourth driest since records began in 1910. Rainfall totals across England and Wales over the ten months ending July were the lowest since 1996 and the ninth driest since records began.

  • June 2011 (PDF, 4MB) - England and Wales received 119% of the long term average (LTA) rainfall in June. Rainfall totals ranged from 86% of the LTA in our Midlands Region to 147% in our South East Region. Cumulative rainfall in our Midlands Region for March to June was provisionally the lowest since 1938 and the second lowest since records began in 1910. Rainfall totals over the nine months ending June were within the top 10 driest since records began in EA Wales and our Anglian, Midlands and South West Regions.

  • May 2011 (PDF, 4MB) - England and Wales received 83% of the long term average (LTA) rainfall in May. Rainfall as a percentage of the LTA was lowest in our Anglian and South East Regions at 43% and 51% respectively. Cumulative rainfall for March to May in our Anglian and South East Regions was provisionally the lowest since records began in 1910. In our Midlands Region, rainfall over the eight month period ending May 2011 was the second driest on record for October to May, 1975-76 being drier.

  • April 2011 (PDF, 3.8MB) - England and Wales received just 24% of the long term average (LTA) rainfall in April, making it the seventh driest April in England and Wales since records began in 1910. Our South East, Anglian and Midlands regions received less than 15% of the LTA. It was the second driest April since records began in 1910 in our South East region and Anglian region.

  • March 2011 (PDF, 4MB) - England and Wales received well below average rainfall in March, at just 30% of the long term average (LTA). Our Anglian region received only 13% of the LTA and all but two of our other regions received less than a third of the LTA.

  • February 2011 (PDF, 4MB) - England and Wales received above average rainfall in February. Rainfall was above average in all our regions, with the exception of our South West region which received 90% of the long term average (LTA). Our North West region received over 200% of the LTA rainfall.

  • January 2011(PDF, 4MB) - England and Wales received average rainfall in January. England and Wales overall received 91% of the LTA over the past twelve months.

2010 reports

  • December 2010 (PDF, 3MB) - Rainfall in December across England and Wales was well below average at just 40% of the long term average (LTA). Overall England and Wales received 89% of the LTA in 2010.

  • November 2010 (PDF, 3MB) - Rainfall in November was slightly above average across England and Wales, however, precipitation totals over the month may be underestimated due to snowfall in the latter part of the month.

  • October 2010 (PDF, 2MB) - Rainfall in October across England and Wales received 96% of the long term average (LTA) rainfall for October, making it the first month since June with below average rainfall. River flows were normal for the time of year at the majority of indicator sites.

  • September 2010 (PDF, 2MB) - Rainfall in September was above average across England and Wales for the third consecutive month. Flows have now returned to normal or higher at almost all indicator sites in England and Wales.

  • August 2010 (PDF, 2MB) - Rainfall in August across England and Wales received 134% of the LTA, the second consecutive month since February with above average rainfall. Rainfall totals ranged from 89% of the LTA in our North West Region to 209% in our Anglian Region.

  • July 2010 (PDF, 3MB) - Rainfall in July across England and Wales was above average for the first time since February but with considerable regional variation.

  • June 2010 (PDF, 3MB) - Rainfall totals for June were well below average across England and Wales and were less than two thirds of the long term average (LTA) for the third consecutive month.

  • May 2010 (PDF, 3MB) - Rainfall totals for May were well below average for a second consecutive month, being just over half the long term average (LTA) across England and Wales. Rainfall totals were lowest in our North West Region at 38% of the LTA.

  • April (PDF, 2MB) - April was a dry month with less than half the long term average (LTA) rainfall for the month across England and Wales.

  • March (PDF, 2MB) - March was a month of contrasts, the first half being very dry before most of the month’s rainfall fell in the
    second half.

  • February (PDF, 2.44MB) - Rainfall in February across England and Wales was 115% of the long term average (LTA) though this varied regionally from 66% in EA Wales to 209% in our Southern Region.

  • January (PDF, 2MB) - Rainfall in England and Wales was below the long term average (LTA) in January.

2009 reports

  • December (PDF, 2MB) - Rainfall in England and Wales was just above the long term average (LTA) in December.

  • November (PDF, 2MB) - The wettest November across England and Wales since records began in 1914.

  • October (PDF, 2MB) - Overall rainfall has been below average across England and Wales.

  • September (PDF, 2MB) - Rainfall was well below average across England and Wales, the driest September since 2002.

  • August (PDF, 2MB) - Rainfall was below average in England and Wales.

  • July (PDF, 2MB) - Across England and Wales this has been the wettest July since records began in 1914.

  • June (PDF, 2MB) - Overall rainfall in June was just below average across England and Wales as a whole.

  • May (PDF, 3MB) - May was wetter than average in northern England and Wales but drier than average elsewhere.

  • April (PDF, 3MB) - April was relatively dry across most of England and Wales.

  • March (PDF, 3MB) - March was drier and warmer than average across all our regions.

  • February (PDF, 3MB) - February was a dry month across much of England and Wales but some places experienced the heaviest snowfall for 18 years.

  • January (PDF, 3MB) - January's rainfall was close to average across most of England and Wales.
