Calverton Fish Farm

An introduction to and description of the work we do at Calverton Fish Farm

Calverton Fish Farm, operated by the Environment Agency, Midlands Region is a major source of river coarse fish in the UK. The site was established during the late 1930s and up until 1986 the main species being produced was trout. At about that time we stopped trout production and we converted the farm into a dedicated river coarse fish production unit. We stocked our first fish out in the 1986/87 season. Since then the Agency has stocked out more than 6.5 million fish from Calverton into waters the length and breadth of England and Wales.

Fish are raised for 1½ to 2½ years, by which time they are at least 10cm in length. We consider this an acceptable age and size for releasing fish into the wild as the majority of coarse fish reach maturity between 2 and 4 years of age.

Also, catch studies have shown that once fish are bigger than 10cm they can be caught by anglers.

In this section we describe the facilities and techniques, which are employed at Calverton Fish Farm.
