Upper Mole Flood Alleviation Scheme

The Upper Mole Flood Alleviation Scheme will provide an improved level of flood protection to the people of Crawley, Horley, and to Gatwick Airport.

The upper reaches of the River Mole are at risk of flooding. Floods caused major disruption and damage to the people of Crawley in 1968 and 2000, and there were smaller floods in other years. The areas of Furnace Green and Three Bridges are particularly at risk.

Gatwick Airport is vulnerable to flooding. A major flood there could cause the airport to close for a period of weeks whilst specialist equipment is replaced. This would cause major disruption to the whole region.

Projects in the Upper Mole scheme

The Upper Mole scheme is made up of five projects. The work at Tilgate Park is currently underway and due to finish by mid 2011. We hope to build the rest of the projects over the next couple of years.
