Our 2009 plans to improve angling in Anglian

Fishing platforms at the Benwick Access ProjectWithin this region we have secured over a third of a million pounds to deliver projects that will improve fisheries and angling opportunities. And with match funding from other Agency departments, external partners and grants we hope to convert this into excess of four times this amount.

About a half of the money has been earmarked for angler accessibility projects and coaching programmes designed to boost angling participation.  We’ll also be undertaking a programme of fisheries habitat improvement works. This includes work to ease fish passage in our rivers as well as work to boost fragile eel stocks as part of our eel management plans.

Some notable projects include:

In Northern area we will be working with the newly formed Welland Rivers Trust to deliver better access for anglers and improve habitat for fish.

In Central area we will be working on a research project to improve our understanding of the habitat requirements of young barbel. This will help to inform future projects aimed at boosting stocks of this popular angling species on rivers such as the Great Ouse.

In Eastern area  we’ll be carrying out work identified in our Fisheries Action plan for the Broads to deliver a wide programme of access improvements for anglers.

All in all great news for anglers living in this part of the country.
