Yellow Fish

Find out about the Yellow Fish scheme

What is the Yellow Fish scheme?

The Yellow Fish scheme has been created to raise awareness about sources of water pollution and the quality of water in your local streams, rivers, lakes or ponds.

It's an educational activity, created in collaboration with Connect Right, highlighting the damage caused by pouring oils, paints, solvents, chemicals or dirty water down highway gullies or surface drains. These drains will ultimately enter watercourses and pouring waste liquids down drains can seriously affect your local environment. This problem is called diffuse pollution, which also includes pollution caused by misconnections.

Yellow Fish is very simple. Volunteers mark drains using the Yellow Fish stencil. Awareness is raised locally by distributing leaflets and putting up posters. If you can get local media involved, all the better!

Who can get involved?

Communities and schools

We want Yellow Fish to encourage communities to take an interest in their watercourses. Communities can lose touch with their local environment and this is a great way to make a difference and achieve sustainable improvements.

For primary and secondary schools, the scheme links in with the science and PSHE curriculum. It can also link with all other subjects and provide cross-curricular project work. It has been designed to act as a platform to be built on and innovated.

Businesses and Developers

Whether you are a single premises or an industrial estate you are part of your local environment and can make a difference.

Developers have a powerful role in creating communities and local environments. Yellow Fish could be incorporated into your new developments, both business and residential. Allied with the Connect Right campaign you can play a key role in improving and maintaining the quality of our watercourses.

You could look at linking with your local schools and community groups to make cooperative improvements.
