Slaking lime

This section contains guidance for slaking quicklime by adding water to produce dry hydrated lime.

You will need a Part A1 environmental permit (England and Wales) or a Part A pollution prevention and control (PPC) permit (Northern Ireland and Scotland) from your environmental regulator if you produce lime:

  • in kilns, or other furnaces, with a production capacity exceeding 50 tonnes per day or
  • where your process is likely to involve the heating in any 12 month period of 5,000 tonnes or more of calcium carbonate, calcium magnesium carbonate or of an aggregate of both.
