Odours

You may create odours from your activities when:

  • using diazo/ozalid proofing systems
  • using hot melt adhesives
  • using animal hot glues
  • using PUR (polyurethane) hot melt adhesives
  • storing and using solvents.

What you must do

You must ensure that your activities do not cause a nuisance or damage to the surrounding area.

Your local council can take action against you if your activities create levels of odour that cause, or have the potential to cause a nuisance, for example damage to property or disturbance to the surrounding community.

Your local council environmental health department can:

  • restrict your operations
  • stop your operations
  • require you to take steps to reduce the nuisance.

Good practice

Provide adequate ventilation over glue tanks to extract vapours and disperse them into the air.

Where possible, install a suitable ventilation system to collect and contain dust and other particulates such as paper dust.

If you operate a corona discharge process (such as a photocopier) or UV lamps, make sure that you have adequate ventilation to ensure that the ozone produced is adequately dispersed.
