Budding anglers of all ages are invited to take part in a series of fun-packed Environment Agency fishing events in Cornwall and West Devon this summer
Once again the events are timed to co-incide with the school holidays when families are looking for new ways to fill their time. The latest ‘Get Hooked’ programme includes trout and coarse fishing sessions at local lakes and reservoirs.
All tuition and equipment is provided free of charge. Normally anyone over the age of 12 must obtain a rod licence from the Environment Agency before fishing for salmon, trout or coarse fish. However, participants in ‘Get Hooked’ events do not need a licence on the day.
‘Fishing is great fun. It gets people outdoors and can involve the whole family. That’s why it is the most popular sport in the country. The idea of Get Hooked is to allow people to try their hand at something new with fully-qualified angling coaches introducing them to the sport of fishing,’ said Sally Mitchell for the Environment Agency.
The first event, a junior trout fishing session, will be held at Stithians Lake near Redruth on July 27, 2010. Similar trout fishing events will take place at Treemeadow Trout Fishery, Hayle and Siblyback Lake near Liskeard on August 2 and August 9 respectively. These sessions are suitable for junior beginners Aged 12 – 16.
Younger children can try coarse fishing at three introductory sessions at Threemilestone Angling Club near Truro on July 28, Bake Lake near Saltash on August 4 and Milemead Fishery, Tavistock on August 1.
Family events start with an introduction to coarse fishing at Milemead Fishery, Tavistock on July 31 followed by a trout fishing session for beginners at Siblyback Lake near Liskeard on August 7 when there will also be a marquee full of information about river and pond life, a café and children’s play area.
