Environment Agency show residents new flood scheme improvements

20-Jan-2012

A community drop-in surgery will be held on Thursday 26 January to update residents in Ottery St Mary about the plans to improve its flood scheme.

The Environment Agency will be carrying out work to the flood scheme in the Chapel Lane area of Ottery St Mary.

The Agency will be showing these plans and answering questions on the proposed work at The Institute, Yonder Street, Ottery St Mary from 12.30 midday to 6pm.

‘The community surgery is an opportunity for interested residents and local businesses to talk to the project team and learn more about the plans and how it will reduce the risk of flooding. It’s also a valuable opportunity for us to gather feedback and views to feed into our consultation process,’ said Bryn Williams, Project Manager, for the Environment Agency.

This event will also be an opportunity for the Environment Agency to discuss the on-going land use project work that has been taking place in the Ottery St. Mary area.

‘This proposed work is one of a number of steps we have taken following the floods in October 2008 to improve flood protection in the East Devon area. When constructed, this scheme will help increase the standard of protection to properties on the East side of Ottery St Mary,’ added Bryn Williams.

The work will involve improvement to the trash screen by increasing its size as well as providing a much better working platform for the Agency’s field team who clear the screen. The Agency will also be streamlining its existing monitoring equipment on site to make best use of the space available..

It is expected that the work will start early in the summer of 2012 and take approximately 12 weeks to complete. The majority of the work will take place within the land around Paradise Cottage (3 Chapel Lane).

Some work will also be carried out in the river channel adjacent to the property. All construction works will take place during normal working hours to keep disruption to the local community to a minimum.
