Craft identification on the River Wye

This consultation is now closed. The response document is now available to download.

Historically the River Wye was an important commercial waterway. Today boating on the river is mostly canoeing and rowing, with some passenger sightseeing boats operating around Symonds Yat. A public right of navigation extends from Bigsweir Bridge upstream to Hay Town Bridge.

At the moment there is no requirement for craft identification on the Wye although some user groups operate their own voluntary craft identification scheme.

We are the navigation authority for the River Wye. The Wye Navigation Advisory Committee (WNAC) helps us develop sustainable recreation and navigation on the river. Earlier this year we held a three month consultation on to find out what you thought about proposals for identifying craft on the River Wye. The results of this consultation are explained in the response document below.
