Near-Surface Disposal Facilities for radioactive wastes: Guidance on Requirements for Authorisation

Our guidance sets out the principles and requirements that we expect a developer, or operator, of a radioactive waste disposal facility to meet to ensure protection of people and the environment, now and in the future.

(Consultation starts 15 May 2008 and ends 1 September 2008)

We published guidance on regulating the disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive waste to specialised facilities on land in 1997.

We are updating this guidance because

  • of developments in UK law and policy;
  • revised international advice and recommendations; and
  • of recognition that specific guidance for near-surface facilities is required.

We are publishing this guidance jointly with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environment and Heritage Service, Northern Ireland.

Our guidance sets out the principles and requirements that we expect a developer, or operator, of a radioactive waste disposal facility to meet to ensure protection of people and the environment, now and in the future.

On 3 July 2008 we held a workshop to discuss this guidance. A broad range of interested parties were invited. On request, you can obtain a copy of the workshop report from:
