Our interim guidance for permit applicants
The regulation of bioaerosols from permitted composting sites is being considered as part of the Government waste policy review in England, expected to report in Spring 2011. As an interim measure we have reviewed and have now issued a new Position Statement. This will apply across England and Wales to the permitting of composting operations that are, or will be, within 250 metres of a ‘sensitive receptor’ (typically a dwelling or workplace). This approach has been agreed with Defra and the Welsh Assembly Government.
This Position Statement replaces our 2007 position statement on Composting and the Potential Health Effects from Bioaerosols, as well as any previous statements on this matter.
This position will be reviewed once we are have the outcome of the Government waste policy review in England.
