We play an important role in the management of the coasts of England and Wales. Our Marine Strategy underpins everything we do in the coastal and marine environment.

Our responsibilities include:
  • Managing flood risk

  • How is flood risk managed?

    We can't prevent flooding entirely, but we can reduce the risks of flooding. By working with our partners and people at risk of flooding, we can minimise it’s effects and reduce the damage it causes.

  • Regulating pollution to maintain good quality water
  • Implementing key European Legislation to safeguard the marine environment (i.e. the Water Framework Directive)
  • Monitoring the state of our coastal waters
  • Regulating sea fisheries in more than half our estuaries
  • Protecting and enhancing species and habitats
