Please note that government planning policy has changed. The administrative boundary used for State of the Environment reporting on this site will be reviewed in light of these changes, once details are known. Meanwhile we will continue to make available environmental evidence to the boundaries at which it was gathered.

West Midlands

The West Midlands includes the Metropolitan Borough Councils of Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton, the counties of Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire, as well as the unitary authorities of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Stoke-On-Trent, and Telford and Wrekin.

The West Midlands is a varied region, with the River Severn traversing southwards through the region. The large central urban conurbation contrasts with the predominately rural counties in the west of the region landscape ranging. This diverse environment is important for our quality of life and provides a wide range of wildlife habitats, some of which are important for rare species; but it is at risk of damage due from pressures such as water abstraction, pollution, fragmentation of habitat areas, and flooding.

We need to protect our environment to prevent lasting damage and permanent change.
