What happened
On 20 July a weather system moved north over Berkshire and intensified. It continued north west over Oxfordshire into Gloucestershire. It developed further which resulted in large amounts of rain (between three and five inches) fell across the area. Flows in the River Thames and River Cherwell increased gradually to begin with, raising water levels in both rivers through the afternoon.
During the late evening and into the early hours, the water level and the flow in the tributaries of the River Thames increased, especially the Rivers Windrush and Evenlode. Flows continued to build and the side streams that accompany the River Thames through Oxford were inundated. Seacourt Stream, Hinksey Stream and Bulstake Steam were particularly affected.
In total, 348 properties were reported flooded.
