Register or renew as a hazardous waste producer

Summary

Hazardous waste is waste that is dangerous to people, the environment or animals. Under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, it is an offence to produce hazardous waste at premises, or remove that waste from premises, unless those premises are either registered with us or are exempt. When you register your premises we give you a unique premises number called a "premises code". This is valid for 12 months from the date of registration. If hazardous waste continues to be produced or removed from these premises after expiry then the premises code must be renewed. You can renew a premises code up to one month in advance of the expiry date.

Do I need to register my premises

Some premises are exempt and do not need to be registered. If you are not sure whether your premises need to be registered, read our guide HWR02A 'Do I need to notify my premises?' (see link under 'See also...' on the left)

Hazardous waste rules apply to agricultural waste - but we have an interim position that applies to the registration of agricultural premises where they produce hazardous waste. You can read more about this by looking at the link for 'Interim position for agricultural premises' under 'See also...' on the left.

Making or renewing a registration

You can read guidance on how to register your premises in HWR02B 'How to register your premises' (see link left).

You can register your own premises or you can get someone to do this on your behalf. You must have the producer's permission before you register them.

You can apply on-line, using a paper form, by phone, on disk or by e-mail:

You will need to know your Standard Industrial Classification code number (SIC) before you can register premises. If you are a limited company you will also need your Companies House number.
